"If not the best Jonathan Stride novel, it's right up there with them。" --5-star reader review

When a freak auto accident kills a driver carrying false identification on the remote roads outside Duluth, Jonathan Stride is disturbed to find a gun in the trunk--and the gun has recently been fired。

The next day, a Duluth college student has also vanished, and Stride worries they're connected--but what would have put an ordinary young woman in the crosshairs of a man who has all the hallmarks of an assassin for hire?

Stride's investigation leads him to a film crew in Duluth, where a movie is being made based on a case in Stride's own past。 The actor playing Stride is Hollywood royalty, an award-winning icon who has charmed his way to the top of the box office。 But Stride soon hears whispers that his cinematic alter ego has a dark side 。 。 。

A book from your TBR list you meant to read last year but didn't--met the author some time ago before having read one of his books -- purchased a couple of them at that time and have been reading to read it。 Enjoyed reading a story that takes place with landmarks that i recognize。 A book from your TBR list you meant to read last year but didn't--met the author some time ago before having read one of his books -- purchased a couple of them at that time and have been reading to read it。 Enjoyed reading a story that takes place with landmarks that i recognize。 。。。more

The criminal was evident early in this mystery。 No surprises in the end。 Interesting contrast in settings from Duluth to Florida。

I'm not sure what it is about Freeman's Jonathan Stride series but I really like them。 They are not as well written as some other Minnesota based mysteries but still 。 。 。They're making a movie about Stride and one of his famous cases。 Jonathan isn't greatly pleased at this but as the cliche says, it is what it is。 And in the midst of big Hollywood stars spending time in Duluth a new criminal mystery arises。 Stride is backed up with his usual group of cops; his wife Serena, his partner Maggie an I'm not sure what it is about Freeman's Jonathan Stride series but I really like them。 They are not as well written as some other Minnesota based mysteries but still 。 。 。They're making a movie about Stride and one of his famous cases。 Jonathan isn't greatly pleased at this but as the cliche says, it is what it is。 And in the midst of big Hollywood stars spending time in Duluth a new criminal mystery arises。 Stride is backed up with his usual group of cops; his wife Serena, his partner Maggie and even his ward, Cat though she is neither a cop and I'm not sure that Jonathan or Serena consider her actions as help。As with many of his books Freeman gives us a gentle but profound - wait; gentle? Hardly! He clubs us over the head with things straight out of the #MeToo movement。 Decently written, filled with action and mystery, this is a truly bloody whodoneit。 Stride isn't as bold as Davenport, as smart as Rhyme, as daring as Bosch, but with dogged determination he gets the job done and the ride he takes us on as he does that job is well worth the fare。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Lots of red herrings and plot twists。 Some good。 But- Some really dumb predictable actions (the teen again 🤢) the worst one- the main storyline, the crazy killer happens to be the “victim” of a previous story but the police didn’t know her true identity when she was a victim in the past, that tied her to more terrible policing in the even further past? And some of the characters continue to be reduced even further to being cliches of themselves。

Almost missed this oneRead this one out of order, but it didn't miss anything because of it。 Each book could be read on its own, but reading in order makes it more interesting。 I already have the next one in my library。 Almost missed this oneRead this one out of order, but it didn't miss anything because of it。 Each book could be read on its own, but reading in order makes it more interesting。 I already have the next one in my library。 。。。more

Outstanding effort in the Stride series。 Looks like he makes a personal breakthrough at last。

I loved this 9th book in the Jonathan Stride series and Cab Bolton's appearance with Maggie investigating together was awesome。 There is a movie being produced about one of Stride's cases and Duluth just loves the actors and actresses filming right in their neighborhood。 The serial killer's son is the producer and is trying to film uninterrupted but when a teen goes missing and ends up dead leads take Jonathan and Maggie to the film crew。 I loved the continued psychological thriller that Brian F I loved this 9th book in the Jonathan Stride series and Cab Bolton's appearance with Maggie investigating together was awesome。 There is a movie being produced about one of Stride's cases and Duluth just loves the actors and actresses filming right in their neighborhood。 The serial killer's son is the producer and is trying to film uninterrupted but when a teen goes missing and ends up dead leads take Jonathan and Maggie to the film crew。 I loved the continued psychological thriller that Brian Freeman excels in with his Stride series! There are the creepy characters, the criminal characters and the regular characters that push the mystery forward and I could not stop turning the pages。 I have the 10th and final book to read now, but I don't want Jonathan Stride mysteries to end, what great detective mystery stories! 。。。more

A good Stride story set in a wintry January in Duluth。 The author has brought the metoo movement to Duluth by bringing a Hollywood movie to Duluth to film a crime story based on an old Stride case。 The plot moved along cleverly and Freeman even manages to bring Cab Bolton into the story。 There was a little too much of Cat and the end was not believable but it was good story nontheless。

This is first book about Jonathan Stride by Brian Freeman and it was an entertaining and clever book which I couldn’t put down。 The villains were true villains and the heroes were just as I like them。It starts with the death in a car crash by a villain with no identity who has a used gun in his car。 It follows on with Stride relating to one of his past cases and involves an actor who has a second self which the public doesn’t see and his evil cohorts。 The past case was when he was too late to sa This is first book about Jonathan Stride by Brian Freeman and it was an entertaining and clever book which I couldn’t put down。 The villains were true villains and the heroes were just as I like them。It starts with the death in a car crash by a villain with no identity who has a used gun in his car。 It follows on with Stride relating to one of his past cases and involves an actor who has a second self which the public doesn’t see and his evil cohorts。 The past case was when he was too late to save three woman, but was able to save a fourth。The story is told with Stride’s wife, his partner, his adopted teenage daughter and another of Brian Freeman’s characters, Cab Bolton。 The characters meld together perfectly。The Police drama takes place in Duluth, Minnesota, with the temperature under Zero and the weather pertains excellently with the plot。I would like to read more of the Jonathan Stride series as I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 。。。more

I listened to this on a road trip from California to Texas。 I really like this Jonathon Stride。 The story was engrossing and had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing。 In the end the murder gets caught and the scummy actor goes to jail。 It was nice to see a Hollywood elite get unmasked and exposed to get what was coming to him。。。 even if it is just fiction。 Great story, great writing and a fine ending。 I actually cheered when mr Joe cool, scumball actor got caught。

A text book psychological thriller, I had to keep reminding myself that the end has to be good since that’s the rule for novels ,because it creeped me out 。 Finished it at 2:30am last night and then had to sleep with the night light on even with my husband around🙈There are 3 crimes in this book and for the last one I had 3 suspects in my head。。。 while the story is familiar ( we have read this storyline in the papers) the book pulls you in and you have to know the end。Also it could be easily made A text book psychological thriller, I had to keep reminding myself that the end has to be good since that’s the rule for novels ,because it creeped me out 。 Finished it at 2:30am last night and then had to sleep with the night light on even with my husband around🙈There are 3 crimes in this book and for the last one I had 3 suspects in my head。。。 while the story is familiar ( we have read this storyline in the papers) the book pulls you in and you have to know the end。Also it could be easily made into an action flick, all the elements exist (and I would know I love action movies)。。。So if you are not looking for anything deep but engaging nonetheless this one is for you ! 。。。more

This book is truly great as all the others。 I took one star out (after I finished my review I added the fifth star back) because I didn’t understand one thing in the end。 It confused me。 So I will write Brian and ask him to explain if he will be able to。 Regarding the plot: it’s my cup of tea, guys。 Everything in this novel is what I like to read about and investigate with main characters。 The revelation in the end (this one surprised me, others I suspected) was good! Sad but good。 We all know that bad people are usually broken ones。 It can never be a reason for a murder but。。。 on some level I can understand the revenge。 Overall I’d like to say that I’m grateful to the autor for writing like three storylines and mixing it into one book。 I mean you can write 3 regular books or you can write 1 brilliant book with lots twists and turns。 I appreciate that very much! 。。。more
